In partnership with Sci-Tech Ontario, the co-ordinating body for Ontario's science fairs, the OAML is engaged in a series of activities designed to encourage high school students to consider the medical laboratory sciences, as a potential career field.

The OAML Awards for Medical Laboratory Sciences recognize excellence in science fair exhibits in the field of medical laboratory sciences in Ontario. The awards are administered by Sci-Tech Ontario.

Our partnership with Sci-Tech is an important component of our Human Resources Program.

INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGISTS
Registration and Certification Process for Internationally Trained Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT's) in Ontario

The College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) is the registering body for MLT's. To work as an MLT in Ontario, internationally trained MLT's will need to have their language, education and experience assessed for equivalency to Ontario Standards. This assessment is called a prior learning assessment (PLA).

CMLTO has contracted the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) to perform the PLA function in conjunction with a firm called the International Credential Evaluation Services (ICES). If your training was taken in a language other than English or French, you must have your language proficiency tested by either TOEFL or CanTEST.

To download the CSMLS Information Handbook, go to www.csmls.org and click on International Technologists. Once the CSMLS confirms equivalency to a Canadian accredited program, an applicant may apply to write the CSMLS national certification examination. After passing the examination, an applicant may apply to the CMLTO for practising membership in order to work in Ontario.

it is sometimes necessary for an applicant to enrol in a bridging program to fill any gaps in education that are needed to fulfil Canadian equivalency requirements. The bridge program also offers to the applicant the opportunity for clinical practice.

CMLTO and the MInistry of Training, Colleges and Universities have developed materials to answer your questions.  Link to the CMLTO Fact Sheet here.

CMLTO has a career map that may be very useful to international technologists. It succinctly outlines the steps that have to be taken to achieve certification and registration in Ontario. To obtain this document, please click on the following link:  CMLTO Career Map
